# Voices

> Choosing how your agent sounds.

The voice is the first thing a caller judges. Pick it deliberately — it's a two-minute decision that every customer experiences.

## Choosing

Browse and preview the available voices under **Voices** during onboarding or from your agent's settings. Listen to each one saying something like your actual greeting rather than the stock sample.

## Test it on a real call

A voice that sounds good in a preview can grate over a phone line. Phone audio is narrowband and compressed, and it flattens everything.

  <Step title="Call your own number">
    From a mobile, not a desk phone or a headset — that's how your customers will hear it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Listen for pace">
    Too fast and callers ask it to repeat, which wastes more time than it saved. Too slow and they interrupt.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the hard words">
    Your business name, street names in your service area, and any technical terms you use. These are what get mangled.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  If your business name is consistently mispronounced, spell it phonetically in your [business profile](/receptionist/business-profile) — write it the way it should sound, not the way it's spelled.
</Tip>

## Changing later

You can change the voice at any time; it applies to calls that start after you save. Existing recordings keep the voice they were made with.

Changing voice doesn't change what the agent says — that comes from your [knowledge base](/receptionist/knowledge-base) and [caller-type configuration](/receptionist/caller-types). If callers are getting the wrong *answers*, a different voice won't help.

<Note>
  Running multiple [agents](/receptionist/agents) — for different locations or languages — lets each carry its own voice.
